I have heard this term and I’ve been wondering how they use it, and I am curious to know how they do it, so I thought I’d share my thoughts on what they do to make loops work and how to do it for yourself.

The best way I can describe it is that loops are a way of re-stitching in time.

Looping is the process of rewinding the game in a specific order in memory as opposed to storing a new scene in a different order. It’s similar to the way computers rewind video so that they can replay a scene in the same fashion. A few computers actually call the process ‘time-looping’.

So, how is time-looping actually done? Well, in most cases, it’s done by making a copy or sequence of a game and then running it again. In a loop however, because the game is in a different order each time around it’s not a loop, it’s actually a process that is continuously updating a game’s file.

The most famous looping is the video game Half-Life, which allows the player to run through a scene in a different order each time. The only caveat to this is that you run through a scene in the same order, but only once each time. So if you are replaying the same scene twice in the same order you might actually be getting the exact same game twice, but you will also get the exact same game twice.

The other looping games are like this. The most notable one is the game Minecraft, where you can change the order of the story every time you run. So if you re-play the same scene twice you might get the exact same game twice, but you will also get the exact same game twice.

It’s an interesting looping concept, but it’s not as simple as just having a pause button or a way to loop.
